Welcome to the CEU Economics Department! We are a dynamic and growing department, and already established as a leading economics department in the region.
Our faculty members hold PhDs from top American and European universities. The departmental faculty conduct research in most areas of applied and theoretical economics and econometrics, including macroeconomics and monetary economics, international economics, labor economics, health economics and economics of education, industrial organization, law and economics, comparative institutional economics, corporate governance, and economics of transition.
In teaching, we train future economists from the region and beyond, providing them with an understanding of the functioning of markets and the role of the state in a market economy. We seek to provide specialization in most major theory and applied fields, as well as topics particularly relevant to the region and the post-communist transition.
We offer an MA and a PhD program in Economics.
The MA program in Economics is a two-year program accredited in the United Stated and the European Union (it thus qualifies as a "Bologna" program). The first year of the program emphasizes rigorous coursework in core economic and econometric theory. The second year offers courses in a variety of applied fields. Students complete the program with successful defense of a master's thesis.
The PhD program in Economics is small and selective. The program ensures state-of-the-art training in all core and many specialized fields of economics. Students are exposed to research through attending the regular departmental seminar series, as well as by presenting their work in the informal "tea talks". The program emphasizes close faculty supervision. The PhD program is also accredited both in the United States and in the European Union.
In collaboration with the Department of Legal Studies we now also offer a new degree: a one-year MA in Economic and Legal Studies. (See the Economic and Legal Studies link for more information.)
